Beasley praises Tatterstall's 'blistering speed' after blitzing rivals in Epsom Dash
JOCKEY Connor Beasley has described Tatterstall as having “blistering pace” after the three-year-old blitzed a competitive field on Derby Day at Epsom.
The Bungle Inthejungle gelding broke quickly and stuck to the stands rail to win the Aston Martin 3Y0 Dash Handicap in fine style by one-and-a-quarter lengths from Mick and David Easterby’s Miss Brazen.
Beasley, riding the lightning-quick five furlong straight at Epsom for the first time, told ITV Racing’s Oli Bell: “We always thought a lot of this horse as a two-year-old and that he’d be a proper Saturday horse. He’s delivered on the big stage, with blistering speed, and he showed his class today.”
The three-year-old, running in the colours of Darlington businessman Dave Stone (pictured left below), was placed three times as a two-year-old and won on his reappearance on the all-weather at Wolverhampton.
Trainer Michael Dods echoed Beasley’s comments, adding: “We always thought a lot of him last year but he was unlucky and encountered soft ground that he didn’t like. That’s why he’s not had much racing this year, because we had to wait for better ground.
“We always thought there was a big race in him and I think he’ll improve again. He’s all speed and a very straightforward horse.
“Dave Stone’s been a good owner for us and it’s great for him to have a winner on Derby Day at Epsom. He deserves the success.”
Dods said he wanted to talk to the owner before making any comment on future plans for the horse.
Reflecting on a great first couple of months of the season, Dods says it’s been a case of patience being a virtue.
After just one winner in April, the yard had 16 in May and is now off the mark for June in good style.
“I didn’t want to run horses like Tatterstall on bad ground and we were happy to sit and wait until things were right. I knew the horses were well and that they’d deliver once the ground dried up. That’s what they’ve done and there’s plenty left to look forward to,” he said.
